Allergies and light sensitivity

Allergic eye inflammation usually causes itching, watering, mild redness, and swelling in both eyes. A sore eye that is difficult to keep open in ordinary light suggests deeper irritation or inflammation and should not automatically be attributed to allergy. Migraine commonly presents with light sensitivity, often with headache, nausea, or visual disturbance. Conjunctivitis may also make the eyes uncomfortable, while inflammation or injury involving the cornea can cause pain and blurred vision. The accompanying features matter more than allergen exposure alone.

Move to softer indoor lighting, rest the eyes, and wear sunglasses outdoors for temporary comfort. Do not drive if glare or vision changes make it unsafe. Avoid rubbing, remove contact lenses, and use a cool clean compress if itching and watering suggest allergy. Do not use leftover antibiotic, steroid, or numbing eye drops; these can be unsuitable and may delay recognition of a more serious eye problem. Record whether one or both eyes are affected and whether headache, nausea, discharge, pain, or blurred vision is present.

Obtain urgent assessment for sudden or severe light sensitivity with eye pain, reduced vision, a very red eye, injury, chemical exposure, or a new unequal pupil. Contact-lens wearers need prompt care if the eye is painful or red. Call emergency services when light sensitivity occurs with severe headache, fever, neck stiffness, confusion, weakness, a seizure, or a rash that does not fade under pressure. Meningitis can present with light sensitivity alongside systemic warning signs, so do not wait for every feature to appear.

Explain whether light feels merely uncomfortable or causes pain, when the problem began, and whether it affects one eye or both. Ask whether the eye surface and cornea need examination and whether migraine could explain episodes accompanied by headache or nausea. Mention contact-lens wear, recent eye procedures, trauma, new medicines, and any change in visual clarity. If allergy treatment helped itching but not light sensitivity, report that difference.
