Understanding the label
A barking cough, hoarse voice and a harsh sound when breathing in fit croup and deserve attention to the child's breathing. Sneezing, itchy eyes and clear nasal discharge fit allergy more closely, but symptoms can occur together.
How croup differs from an allergy flare
Croup involves swelling around the voice box and windpipe and commonly presents with a seal-like barking cough, hoarseness and noisy inhalation called stridor. It often follows cold-like symptoms and may include fever.
Allergy can inflame the nose and throat or provoke asthma symptoms, but it does not explain every episode of barking cough. Sudden hoarseness or breathing trouble after food, medicine or an insect sting raises concern for a serious allergic reaction rather than routine croup.
What to do during an episode
Keep the child upright and calm because distress can make noisy breathing worse. Offer small drinks if swallowing is comfortable, keep the air free from smoke and avoid forcing the child to lie down. Do not use steam because hot water can cause burns and has no dependable role in relieving airway swelling.
Contact a clinician for a barking cough, especially in a young child or when the diagnosis is uncertain. Treatment depends on severity; a clinician may use medicine to reduce airway swelling, while more serious symptoms may require monitored urgent treatment.
When breathing needs urgent assessment
Seek urgent care if stridor is heard while the child is resting, the skin pulls in at the ribs or neck, breathing becomes fast or laboured, the child drools or cannot swallow, or symptoms are worsening. Call emergency services for blue or grey lips, marked drowsiness, pauses in breathing, collapse, or swelling of the tongue or throat.
Do not inspect the throat or give food or drink to a child who is struggling to breathe or unable to swallow. Keep them calm and follow emergency-service instructions.

Can allergies cause a barking cough?
Allergy can irritate the upper airway, but a barking cough is a recognised presentation of croup. A clinician should assess the child when the cause is unclear or breathing sounds noisy.
Is stridor the same as wheezing?
No. Stridor is a harsh sound most noticeable while breathing in and points to narrowing in the upper airway. Wheezing is usually a musical sound from the chest, often while breathing out.
Should I give an antihistamine for croup?
