Allergic asthma symptoms in adults

The pattern may be subtle: disturbed sleep, slower exercise, coughing during calls, or symptoms that ease away from a workplace or home environment. Adult-onset breathing symptoms deserve assessment even without childhood asthma.

Dust mites, pollen, mould or animal allergens may be relevant when exposure and symptoms repeatedly coincide. Work materials can also matter; a pattern that improves on days away should be recorded and discussed without making abrupt employment decisions.

Asthma commonly presents with wheeze, cough or tightness, but those symptoms also occur in infections and other heart or lung problems. Smoking, vaping, reflux, medicines and nasal allergy can complicate the picture, so diagnosis requires more than recognising a trigger.

Keep notes on time, place, task, exposure, sleep and exercise limitation. Include weekends, travel and changes in the home or workplace. A clinician may pair this history with spirometry or peak-flow monitoring to look for variable narrowing of the airways.

Continue prescribed treatment and bring inhalers to the visit for a technique check. Seek a review when episodes recur, daily activities become harder, night symptoms develop, or reliever use rises beyond the instructions in your action plan.

Arrange urgent medical help if you cannot finish sentences because of breathlessness, your lips appear blue or grey, you become faint, drowsy or confused, or symptoms worsen despite following the reliever steps prescribed for you. New chest pressure with sweating, nausea or pain spreading to the arm or jaw also needs emergency assessment.

Ask whether the timing suggests a home, seasonal or occupational allergen; what testing can confirm variable airflow; and which other causes need checking. Request clear instructions for managing symptoms at work, during exercise and overnight.
