What should you know about allergic asthma symptoms?

Symptoms may begin soon after contact or become noticeable later, and they can vary from one episode to another. Night waking, reduced exercise tolerance, or needing a prescribed reliever more often can signal that asthma control is worsening. Wheeze may be absent even during significant breathing difficulty, so the whole pattern matters.

Allergic asthma is asthma in which exposure to a sensitising substance contributes to airway inflammation and tightening. Possible triggers include dust mites, pollen, mould, cockroaches, and animal dander. A runny or blocked nose, sneezing, or itchy eyes may occur alongside the breathing symptoms when allergic rhinitis is also present.

Cough may be dry, disturb sleep, or appear with exercise. Wheezing is a musical or whistling sound, often heard while breathing out. Chest tightness may feel like pressure or restriction rather than pain. These features also occur with other illnesses, so a clinician considers their timing, variability, triggers, examination, and breathing tests rather than diagnosing from one symptom.

Use prescribed inhalers according to your written asthma action plan and check that the device is being used correctly. Move away from a known trigger when this can be done safely, but do not delay medicine or urgent care. Keep preventer treatment going as prescribed even on symptom-free days.

Record what happened before symptoms, whether they interrupted sleep or activity, which medicine was used, and how breathing responded. Arrange a clinical review if symptoms recur, disturb sleep, restrict normal activity, or require the reliever more often than usual. A review can reassess the diagnosis, inhaler technique, adherence, nasal allergy, workplace or home exposures, and the action plan.

Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, inability to speak comfortably in full sentences, blue or grey lips, confusion, marked drowsiness, exhaustion, or collapse. The same urgency applies when a prescribed reliever is not helping or no reliever is available during serious breathing difficulty.

While help is coming, sit upright and follow the emergency steps in the personal asthma plan. Do not lie flat, drive yourself, or wait for wheezing to appear. Sudden throat swelling, facial swelling, widespread hives, faintness, or breathing trouble after an exposure may indicate a severe allergic reaction and also requires immediate emergency action.

Ask which changes should prompt routine review, same-day care, or emergency help, and have the clinician write these into your action plan. Discuss whether peak-flow monitoring would be useful and what personal reading should guide action.

Describe the rooms, seasons, animals, activities, medicines, and work exposures associated with symptoms. Ask whether allergy assessment, breathing tests, or treatment for nasal symptoms would help distinguish triggers and improve overall control.
