What should you know about an AliveCor ECG machine?

It can capture electrical activity when you feel palpitations or want a rhythm check. The accompanying app may label a recording, yet a clinician may need to review the tracing alongside your symptoms, medical history and other tests.

A personal ECG is a snapshot of the heart's electrical rhythm during the recording. It may help document an irregular rhythm that comes and goes, especially when the tracing is captured while symptoms are present. A normal-looking snapshot does not rule out a rhythm problem that was absent at that moment, and it does not assess every cause of chest discomfort, breathlessness or fainting.

Automated labels are screening prompts rather than a diagnosis. Movement, poor skin contact, cold fingers and electrical interference can produce an unclear trace. Device models and app features differ, so use the instructions supplied with your particular unit.

Sit still, support your hands, relax your arms and make clean, dry contact with the electrodes as directed. Avoid talking or changing position while the device records. Save a note describing what you felt, what you were doing, and whether you had taken caffeine, decongestants or heart medicines.

If a trace is repeatedly unreadable, check device contact, compatibility and setup rather than drawing conclusions from it. Bring or securely share relevant recordings with your clinician. Do not start, stop or change prescribed medicine because of an app label alone.

Call local emergency services for chest pressure or pain, severe shortness of breath, collapse, fainting, new weakness on one side, or palpitations with marked dizziness. Do not delay urgent help to make another recording or wait for the app to classify the rhythm.

Arrange a clinical appointment for new or recurring palpitations, consistently unusual readings, or symptoms that interfere with daily activity. A clinician can decide whether you need a standard ECG, longer monitoring, blood tests or another assessment.

Ask which recordings are worth sharing, whether your symptoms require longer monitoring, and whether medicines or stimulants could be affecting your rhythm. Also confirm what action to take if the app repeatedly shows an unexpected label and which symptoms should bypass home recording and prompt emergency care.
