How Aldactone works as an androgen blocker

The phrase “male blocker” usually refers to blocking androgens such as testosterone, not blocking a person's sex or identity. Aldactone is the brand name for spironolactone, a medicine with both anti-androgen and fluid-regulating actions.

Spironolactone limits androgen signaling at its receptors and may also reduce androgen production. Depending on the treatment purpose, this can influence oily skin, acne, body-hair growth, libido and erections. It does not remove existing facial hair, and effects differ among individuals.

The medicine was not designed solely as a hormone treatment. Its action in the kidneys increases salt and water loss while reducing potassium loss, which explains increased urination and the need to watch blood pressure, kidney function and potassium.

Use spironolactone only for a defined clinical goal under a prescriber's guidance. Provide a complete list of medicines, supplements and salt substitutes, and mention kidney or adrenal disease, low blood pressure, dehydration or previous high potassium.

Follow the dosing instructions and attend planned reviews and blood tests. Stand up slowly if light-headedness occurs, and seek advice during an illness that causes vomiting, diarrhoea or poor drinking. Do not combine hormone medicines obtained from informal sources.

Emergency assessment is appropriate for collapse, difficulty breathing, swelling around the mouth or throat, severe confusion, extreme muscle weakness, or a slow or irregular heartbeat. These are not routine signs that androgen blocking is working.

Speak with the prescribing clinician about persistent dizziness, troublesome breast tenderness, sexual changes, reduced urine output or side effects that conflict with your goals. A review can separate expected effects from problems requiring a different plan.
