Alar Botox: purpose, limits and safety

The term usually describes injections near muscles that widen or pull on the nostrils during facial expression. The goal is a subtle change in dynamic flare, not structural narrowing of the nose. Results depend on anatomy and muscle activity.

Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces signalling between a targeted nerve and muscle. Around the nose, small placement differences can affect smile movement, upper-lip position or nostril function, so a detailed facial examination matters. A clinician should assess the nose both at rest and during smiling, speaking and deep breathing.

Filler works through added volume rather than muscle relaxation, and neither injectable substitutes for surgery when the concern is bone, cartilage or substantial structural asymmetry. The safest plan starts by defining which tissue creates the visible feature.

Choose a licensed medical injector experienced with nasal anatomy. Explain any baseline breathing problem, facial weakness, neuromuscular condition, previous nasal procedure, medicines, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and prior reaction to an injectable. Ask which muscle is being targeted and what unwanted movement change could occur.

After treatment, follow the injector's specific instructions and avoid pressing or manipulating the sites unless directed. Keep a record of the product and treatment area. Do not seek an early extra dose simply because the effect is still developing; reassessment should guide any adjustment.

Get urgent medical help for trouble breathing or swallowing, widespread weakness, faintness, or swelling of the face, tongue or throat. These are not expected cosmetic effects and should not wait for a routine follow-up.

Contact the treating clinician promptly for new nasal obstruction, a marked smile change, worsening asymmetry, visual symptoms, significant pain, spreading redness or discharge. Mild tenderness at an injection point can occur, but symptoms that progress need assessment.

Ask whether your concern is caused by active muscle pull or fixed nasal structure, which product will be used, and how placement protects your smile and breathing. Discuss the likely degree of visible change, what temporary asymmetry might look like, when review is appropriate, and who to contact if function changes after the injection.
