Using an air purifier for allergies and asthma

Its value depends on the trigger, filter, room size and how consistently the unit runs. It is most useful as one part of indoor-air control alongside cleaning, ventilation choices and a clinician-agreed treatment plan.

A particle filter can capture material suspended in the air, including dust, pollen and some pet dander. It does much less for material settled on bedding, carpets and furniture. House dust mite allergen therefore also requires attention to fabrics, moisture and regular cleaning.

A purifier does not diagnose a trigger. Asthma commonly presents with wheezing, cough, chest tightness or breathlessness, while allergic rhinitis often brings sneezing, an itchy nose and congestion. Symptoms can overlap, and a person may have both conditions.

Select a device intended for the room where symptoms are most troublesome, place it where airflow is not obstructed, and follow the maker's schedule for cleaning and filter replacement. Running it with doors and windows positioned as the instructions recommend helps air pass through the filter.

Avoid devices designed to produce ozone, which can irritate airways. Keep smoke, incense, aerosol sprays and strong fragrances out of the room. Continue controller and reliever medicines exactly as prescribed; improved air quality is not a reason to reduce them independently.

Get urgent help if breathlessness is severe, speaking becomes difficult, lips look blue or grey, the chest pulls in with breathing, confusion develops, or the prescribed reliever is not helping as directed in the asthma action plan.

Book a clinical review if symptoms wake you, limit exercise, require reliever medicine more often than expected, or continue despite environmental changes. The review can check inhaler technique, identify likely exposures and update the action plan.
