AGNES RF microneedling: a patient guide

Although it may be grouped with RF microneedling, AGNES is often used in a more focal way: the clinician selects a needle and treats particular structures or small areas. The goal and settings should be chosen for the concern, skin thickness and treatment site.

Conventional fractional RF microneedling usually places an array of needles across a broader area to create evenly spaced zones of thermal injury. AGNES commonly uses individual or small-group electrodes to target tissue more selectively. Both approaches use radiofrequency rather than laser light, but they are not interchangeable procedures.

Clinics may discuss AGNES for concerns involving enlarged oil glands, selected acne lesions, contouring or small benign bumps. Whether it is appropriate depends on the diagnosis and the depth of the target. The treatment label alone does not identify the planned needle, energy level or technique.

Before booking, request a consultation that identifies exactly what will be treated and what change is realistic. Disclose active acne or cold sores, skin infection, a tendency to form raised scars, recent procedures, medicines that affect bleeding, pregnancy, and implanted electrical or metal devices.

The visit may involve cleansing, local anaesthetic and careful needle placement. Afterwards, use only the cleanser, moisturiser or ointment advised by the clinic. Leave crusts intact, avoid vigorous rubbing and delay exfoliating acids, retinoids and heat exposure while the skin is irritated. Consistent sun protection helps reduce uneven pigment during recovery.

Call the clinic promptly if pain is intensifying, redness is expanding, the area feels increasingly hot, or you develop pus, fever, extensive blistering or an open wound. Sudden facial weakness, vision disturbance, severe eye pain or breathing difficulty warrants urgent medical care.

Arrange follow-up for persistent numbness, a firm raised scar, lasting colour change or an outcome that differs substantially from the agreed plan. Wait for the skin to be examined and fully recovered before layering another energy procedure over the same area.

Ask which tissue the clinician intends to target, why AGNES was selected over fractional treatment, which needle will be used, and what endpoint they will look for. Discuss anaesthesia, expected visible recovery, alternatives, operator training and the plan if pigment change, infection or scarring develops.
