What to know about freckles as skin ages

True freckles are usually flat, small areas of extra pigment that become more noticeable after ultraviolet exposure. Some fade when exposure decreases, while other age-related brown marks may persist and are not necessarily freckles.

A spot’s history matters as much as its colour. Long-standing, evenly coloured freckles that respond to sun exposure differ from a mark that is newly raised, has several colours, develops an irregular edge, or changes independently of the surrounding freckles. A dermatologist can examine the pattern with magnification and decide whether any lesion needs closer evaluation.

Sun exposure accumulated over time can also produce larger, more persistent patches often called sun spots. These may resemble freckles to the eye, so confirming the diagnosis should come before cosmetic treatment.

Use broad-spectrum sunscreen, shade, a hat, and protective clothing to reduce further darkening and ultraviolet damage. Reapply sunscreen after swimming, heavy sweating, or prolonged outdoor exposure. Photograph a spot in consistent lighting beside a size reference if you want to monitor it, but do not let photographs replace an examination.
