Age warts on the face: what to know

They are not the same as viral warts. A clinician can examine the surface pattern and decide whether treatment is appropriate, particularly on delicate facial skin.

“Age wart” is an informal name for seborrheic keratosis. These growths may look waxy, rough, scaly or as though they are sitting on top of the skin. Their colour can range from skin-toned to brown or nearly black, so visual assessment matters.

Several facial lesions can resemble one another. A new dark mark should not be labelled at home solely from a photograph or texture, because moles, sun-related changes and skin cancers can have overlapping features.

Avoid picking, scraping or applying strong wart acids near the eyes, lips or nostrils. These products are intended for particular lesions and can irritate facial skin or leave pigment changes.

If removal is wanted because the growth catches, itches or causes cosmetic concern, a dermatologist may discuss freezing, scraping with controlled cautery, or electrosurgery. The choice depends on diagnosis, thickness, position, skin tone and the likelihood of a visible mark.

Arrange a medical review if a facial growth is new and unusual, grows quickly, develops uneven colours or borders, repeatedly bleeds, becomes persistently sore, or fails to heal. Seek timely assessment rather than trying to remove an uncertain lesion first.

Sudden irritation after shaving or rubbing is not automatically dangerous, but ongoing bleeding or change still warrants examination.
