What to Do After Vomiting

Short answer
After vomiting, rest your stomach briefly, then take frequent small sips of fluid and watch for dehydration.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First priority
- Replace fluids gradually with small, frequent sips
- Useful option
- Oral rehydration solution replaces water and salts
- Dehydration clues
- Little urine, dry mouth, weakness, dizziness, or unusual sleepiness
The short answer
After vomiting, rest your stomach briefly, then take frequent small sips of fluid and watch for dehydration. An oral rehydration solution can replace both fluid and salts. Once liquids stay down and appetite returns, try a small amount of plain food. Do not force a full meal.
What vomiting may mean
Gastroenteritis and food poisoning can present with vomiting, diarrhoea, cramps, or fever. Migraine can include nausea and vomiting alongside headache and sensitivity to light. Gallstones or pancreatitis may include vomiting with significant upper abdominal pain. Meningitis may include vomiting with severe headache, neck stiffness, confusion, or a rash. The accompanying symptoms and pattern matter more than vomiting alone.
How to rehydrate and restart food
Begin with small sips of water or oral rehydration solution; large drinks may trigger more nausea. If another episode occurs, pause briefly and restart more slowly. When fluids remain down, choose easy-to-tolerate foods such as toast, rice, crackers, banana, or soup according to appetite. Avoid alcohol, heavy or greasy meals, and strenuous activity while recovering. Wash hands carefully and do not prepare food for others when an infectious stomach illness is possible.
When vomiting needs medical care
Seek urgent care for blood or material resembling coffee grounds in vomit, green vomit, severe or worsening abdominal pain, a rigid or swollen abdomen, chest pain, fainting, confusion, severe headache with neck stiffness, a new rash, or vomiting after a significant head injury. Get prompt help if fluids will not stay down or dehydration develops, such as very little urine, a very dry mouth, marked weakness, dizziness on standing, or unusual sleepiness. Babies, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with diabetes, kidney disease, or reduced immunity may need earlier assessment.
What to discuss with your clinician
Describe when vomiting began, whether it followed a meal, travel, a new medicine, alcohol, injury, or contact with someone unwell, and whether others who ate the same food became ill. Report abdominal pain location, diarrhoea, fever, headache, urine output, pregnancy possibility, and the appearance of the vomit. Ask which fluids are suitable, whether prescribed medicines should be repeated after an episode, and whether an anti-sickness medicine is safe for you.

Questions people ask
What should I drink after vomiting?
Take small, frequent sips of water or oral rehydration solution. If nausea returns, pause briefly and resume with smaller amounts rather than drinking a large volume at once.
When can I eat after vomiting?
Try a small amount of plain food when liquids stay down and you feel hungry. There is no need to force food; hydration comes first.
Should I take anti-sickness medicine?
Suitability depends on your age, pregnancy status, other medicines, medical conditions, and the cause of vomiting. Check with a pharmacist or clinician before using it, especially for a child.
