How long does bleeding last after miscarriage?

The pattern varies with how far the pregnancy had progressed and whether recovery was expectant, managed with medicine, or completed with a procedure.

Flow can be heavier than a usual period at first, with cramps and clots, before becoming lighter and browner. It may pause and restart, especially during expectant or medical management, but the overall direction should be towards less bleeding and discomfort.

A procedure may lead to a different pattern from passing the pregnancy tissue without surgery. Your care team’s instructions are therefore more useful than comparing your exact number of days with someone else’s experience.

Use pads while actively bleeding and note the flow, clots, pain, temperature, discharge, and whether symptoms are easing. Take prescribed or recommended medicines as directed and attend any arranged follow-up, which may include a pregnancy test, blood test, or scan.

Contact the care team if you are unsure whether tissue has passed, if bleeding is not becoming lighter, or if a pregnancy test remains positive when you were told to check it. Do not change prescribed medicine without advice.

Get urgent medical help if blood is soaking through pads rapidly, you pass very large clots repeatedly, or bleeding is accompanied by fainting, severe weakness, breathlessness, confusion, or severe abdominal pain.

Fever, chills, foul-smelling discharge, worsening pelvic tenderness, shoulder-tip pain, or feeling suddenly very unwell also needs prompt assessment. These warning signs matter more than the number of days since the miscarriage.

Ask what flow and cramping fit your management plan, when to perform any follow-up test, who to call out of hours, and what the next step would be if bleeding persists or retained tissue is suspected.
