After a possible dengue mosquito bite

Short answer
A mosquito bite alone cannot confirm dengue; prevent further bites, monitor your health, and act on concerning symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Bite appearance
- Cannot reveal whether dengue virus was transmitted
- Immediate priority
- Prevent more bites and observe for illness
- Medicine caution
- Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen if dengue is suspected
The short answer
The bite may look like an ordinary itchy bump, and appearance cannot show whether the mosquito carried dengue virus. There is no useful treatment taken simply because a bite occurred; attention shifts to symptom monitoring and bite prevention.
What to watch for
Dengue fever may present with fever, strong headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle or joint aches, nausea, rash, or unusual tiredness. These symptoms overlap with other infections, so clinical assessment considers the whole pattern and exposure history.
An itchy spot immediately after a bite is a local skin reaction, not evidence of dengue. Avoid scratching, wash the area, and use a cool compress. Spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus, or facial swelling points to a separate bite reaction or skin problem that may need care.
Actions after the bite
Use repellent as directed, cover exposed skin, and keep windows or doors screened where practical. Remove standing water from containers around the home. These measures reduce additional bites and help limit mosquito exposure for others.
If fever or a dengue-like illness develops, rest, drink fluids, and arrange medical advice. Paracetamol may be used as directed. Avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen until dengue has been excluded or a clinician approves them, because bleeding can be a concern in dengue.
When symptoms need attention
Seek medical assessment for fever with marked headache, body aches, rash, vomiting, bleeding, or worsening weakness, particularly after time in a place where dengue is circulating. Tell the clinician where you were and when symptoms began.
Go urgently for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, blood in vomit, black stools, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, cold clammy skin, or greatly reduced urine. Urgency comes from these red flags, not from how the bite looks.
Information to bring to a consultation
Be ready to describe travel or local exposure, symptom onset, temperature changes, fluid intake, urination, bleeding, and medicines already taken. Ask whether testing is appropriate now or whether monitoring and a later review would be more informative.

Questions people ask
Can a test confirm dengue immediately after a bite?
Testing is chosen according to symptoms and their timing; an immediate test after an isolated bite is not generally useful. A clinician can decide what is appropriate if illness develops.
Does every mosquito bite in a dengue area cause dengue?
No. Transmission requires a bite from an infected mosquito, and the bite itself does not reveal infection. Monitor for illness without assuming that a skin bump is dengue.
Should I take antibiotics after the bite?
Antibiotics do not prevent dengue because dengue is caused by a virus. They may be prescribed only if a clinician identifies a separate bacterial infection.
