Can you get pregnant after an ectopic pregnancy?

Your outlook depends partly on the health of the remaining tube or tubes, the treatment you received and other fertility factors. A previous ectopic pregnancy means that an early assessment in the next pregnancy is especially important to confirm where it is developing.

Medicine can treat some ectopic pregnancies without removing a tube, while surgery may remove the affected tube or treat it in another way. One healthy fallopian tube may still collect an egg and allow conception. Conditions that affect the tubes, such as previous pelvic infection, may also influence fertility.

Your follow-up plan may include blood tests until pregnancy hormone levels fall as expected. If methotrexate was used, the treating team will give specific advice about folic acid, medicines and when to try to conceive because the drug affects rapidly dividing cells.

Complete the recommended follow-up before trying again and arrange a preconception discussion if you have ongoing pelvic symptoms, known tubal disease or concerns about fertility. Review medicines and general pregnancy preparation with a clinician rather than changing prescribed treatment yourself.

When a pregnancy test becomes positive, contact your maternity or early-pregnancy service promptly. They may arrange hormone testing and an early transvaginal ultrasound at the appropriate time to locate the pregnancy. A scan performed too early may not yet give a definite answer, so repeat assessment can be necessary.

During a possible or confirmed pregnancy, seek urgent medical assessment for severe or one-sided pelvic or abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, or vaginal bleeding with pain. These symptoms require prompt evaluation because an ectopic pregnancy can bleed internally.

Do not wait for a routine scan if symptoms are severe or worsening. Tell the emergency team about the previous ectopic pregnancy, the date of the positive test if known, and any current fertility treatment.

If conception is taking longer than expected for your circumstances, ask when a fertility evaluation would be appropriate and whether tubal assessment is relevant.
