What should you know about an AeroForm tissue expander?

Short answer

An AeroForm tissue expander is an implanted device designed to gradually stretch breast tissue using controlled releases of compressed carbon dioxide.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Purpose
Gradually creates space for staged breast reconstruction
Expansion medium
Compressed carbon dioxide inside the implanted system
Next stage
Surgical removal or exchange according to the reconstruction plan

Direct answer

It may be used during staged breast reconstruction after breast surgery. Expansion creates space for a later implant, and the device is normally removed during a subsequent operation.

How this expander works

Unlike an expander filled by injections through a port, the AeroForm system contains a reservoir of compressed carbon dioxide. A matched remote controller communicates with the implanted device so that prescribed small amounts of gas can be released into the expander.

As expansion progresses, the chest skin and soft tissue gradually accommodate the changing shape. Tightness, pressure or temporary discomfort can occur. The reconstructive surgeon sets the plan and checks healing, breast shape and tissue condition before progression or exchange surgery.

Caring for yourself during expansion

Follow the surgeon's instructions for operating the controller, incision care, supportive clothing and activity. Use only the controller assigned to your device, keep it stored as directed and do not repeat an attempted expansion unless your team has explained what to do.

Attend planned reviews even when recovery feels straightforward. Before imaging, security screening, air travel or another procedure, tell the relevant professional that you have an implanted expander and carry any device information supplied by the surgical team. Restrictions can depend on the device and stage of reconstruction.

Symptoms that need medical attention

Call the breast reconstruction team promptly for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, wound drainage, fever, worsening pain, a sudden change in breast shape or skin that becomes unusually pale, dark or tense. Also report controller errors or an expander that seems to change without an intended activation.

Seek urgent medical care for severe chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, fainting, rapidly expanding swelling or heavy bleeding. Do not try to press, puncture, reposition or remove the implanted device yourself.

Questions for your reconstruction team

Confirm how and when to use the controller, which sensations are expected, what activities or travel require special planning, and whom to call if an activation fails. Ask what determines readiness for exchange surgery and whether radiotherapy or other cancer treatment changes the reconstruction plan.

Questions people ask

Is an AeroForm expander the final breast implant?

No. It is intended for the expansion stage and is generally exchanged or removed during a later operation once the tissue and treatment plan are suitable.

Should expansion hurt?

Pressure, tightness or temporary discomfort may occur, but escalating pain or pain with redness, fever, marked swelling or skin colour change needs prompt assessment.

Can I have medical imaging with the expander in place?

Imaging compatibility and precautions depend on the exact implanted device. Tell the imaging team beforehand and have them confirm the device instructions with your reconstruction team.
