Short answer

Adrenal fatigue is not a recognised medical diagnosis, so persistent tiredness needs assessment for established causes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Medical status
Adrenal fatigue is not a recognised diagnosis.
Useful first step
Assess persistent fatigue for established causes.
Medicine caution
Do not stop prescribed steroids suddenly without clinical advice.

The short answer

The term is often used for exhaustion, poor concentration, disrupted sleep or feeling unable to cope with stress. Those experiences are real, but they do not by themselves show that the adrenal glands have become depleted.

What the term means

Adrenal glands make hormones that help regulate blood pressure, metabolism and the response to stress. Recognised adrenal disorders involve too little or too much of particular hormones and require specific clinical and laboratory assessment. General fatigue alone cannot identify one.

Low energy can instead relate to sleep loss, stress, low mood, medicines, dehydration, anaemia, thyroid problems, infection or another health condition. The pattern, associated symptoms and examination guide which possibilities need checking.

Practical next steps

Arrange a primary-care appointment if tiredness persists, keeps returning or limits ordinary activities. Note when it began, sleep quality, appetite or weight changes, mood, menstrual bleeding, recent illness and every medicine or supplement you use. This gives the clinician a clearer starting point.

Regular sleep times, adequate fluids, balanced meals and activity matched to your energy may support recovery while the cause is assessed. Avoid starting adrenal hormone products or stopping prescribed steroids on your own; sudden steroid withdrawal can be dangerous.

When care is urgent

Seek urgent medical help for severe weakness with fainting, confusion, repeated vomiting, marked abdominal pain, difficulty breathing or inability to keep fluids down. These features can accompany dehydration or other acute illness and should not be managed as ordinary fatigue.

Prompt assessment is also sensible when fatigue comes with unexplained weight loss, dark or bloody stools, persistent fever, new neurological symptoms, or a major change in mood.

Questions for your clinician

You might ask which causes fit your symptom pattern, whether any medicines could contribute, what examination or tests are appropriate, and when to return if symptoms continue. If you take prescribed steroids, ask for clear instructions about missed doses, illness and safe dose changes.

Questions people ask

Can a saliva test confirm adrenal fatigue?

No single saliva test confirms the non-standard label of adrenal fatigue. Testing for a recognised adrenal disorder is chosen and interpreted by a clinician according to symptoms and circumstances.

Could tiredness still have a medical cause?

Yes. Fatigue can accompany anaemia, sleep problems, infections, medicine effects, mood disorders, hormonal conditions and other illnesses, so ongoing symptoms deserve a structured assessment.

Are adrenal support supplements harmless?

Not necessarily. Ingredients may cause side effects, interact with medicines or contain hormone-like substances. Bring the product or its ingredient list to a pharmacist or clinician before using it.
