PET scans for adenocarcinoma: purpose, preparation and results

The scan combines functional PET images with the anatomical detail of CT. It cannot confirm every bright area as cancer, and some cancers show little tracer uptake. The report therefore needs to be read alongside pathology, earlier imaging, treatment history and current symptoms.

A commonly used tracer is FDG, a glucose-like substance carrying a small radioactive signal. Areas using more glucose may appear more active. Cancer can cause increased uptake, but inflammation, infection, healing tissue and normal organs can also take up tracer.

The CT portion helps locate activity within a body structure. A radiologist or nuclear medicine specialist considers the pattern rather than relying on brightness alone. Depending on the finding, the next step may be comparison with previous scans, targeted imaging, observation or a biopsy.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about fasting, drinking plain water, medicines and physical activity. Tell the team before arrival if you have diabetes, could be pregnant, are breastfeeding, need help lying flat, or feel anxious in enclosed equipment. These details may alter preparation or scheduling.

After the tracer injection, you rest quietly while it circulates, then lie still as the scanner acquires images. Wear comfortable clothing and remove metal items when directed. The department will explain contact precautions, hydration and toilet use after the examination.

Tell staff immediately if you develop breathing difficulty, facial swelling, widespread rash, dizziness or severe pain during the appointment. Serious reactions are not expected, but these symptoms require direct assessment.

Do not wait for the scan report if you have a separate urgent cancer-related symptom such as severe breathlessness, new confusion, a seizure, sudden weakness or uncontrolled bleeding. Seek emergency care, because PET-CT is an assessment tool rather than emergency treatment.

Beforehand, ask what clinical question the scan is intended to answer and whether the CT uses an additional contrast agent. Afterwards, ask which findings are clearly explained, which remain uncertain, whether comparison images were available, and whether any area needs a different test or tissue sample.
