Active varicella: care and warning signs

Fever, tiredness, reduced appetite, or headache can accompany the rash. New spots may appear while older ones are already blistering or crusting.

Chickenpox spreads readily through close contact and airborne droplets. A person can pass it on before the rash is obvious and remains infectious until every blister has crusted and no new lesions are appearing.

The virus later stays inactive in nerve tissue and can reactivate as shingles; shingles is not the same as a new episode of widespread chickenpox. Adults, pregnant people, newborns, and people with weakened immunity can develop more serious illness and should seek early clinical advice after exposure or when symptoms begin.

Stay away from school, work, shared waiting rooms, and close contact with anyone who is pregnant, immunocompromised, or a newborn until all spots have crusted. Telephone the clinic before attending so staff can prevent exposure to others.

Drink fluids, keep nails short, wear loose clothing, and use cool bathing or other soothing measures recommended by a clinician or pharmacist. Avoid scratching because broken blisters can become infected and scar. Ask which fever or itch medicine is appropriate for the person's age and medical history; do not give aspirin to a child with chickenpox. Antiviral medicine may be considered for selected patients and works best when assessed early.

Obtain prompt medical advice for pregnancy, a weakened immune system, a very young infant, worsening fever, dehydration, or skin that becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, painful, or produces pus.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, severe drowsiness, confusion, a stiff neck, repeated vomiting, trouble walking, a seizure, or spots affecting the eye. These symptoms can signal complications and should not be managed only with home care.

Clarify whether the rash pattern fits chickenpox, whether antiviral treatment is appropriate, and how to manage itch without unsafe medicine combinations. Ask when normal activities can resume and what household contacts should do about vaccination or exposure.
