What should you know about actinic superficial folliculitis?

It may develop after intense sunlight, especially when exposure increases suddenly. Because acne, heat rash, infections and reactions to skin products can look similar, recurrent or extensive episodes deserve a medical diagnosis.

The eruption consists of surface-level inflammation centred on hair follicles. Small red bumps or pustule-like spots may appear on the chest, shoulders, upper back or arms after sun exposure. Itching or tenderness can occur, but the exact pattern varies.

The word actinic describes the relationship with ultraviolet light; it does not by itself mean skin cancer. A clinician checks timing, distribution, medicines, sunscreens and other products, and looks for signs that point instead to bacterial or yeast folliculitis.

Move out of strong sun, keep the skin cool and wear loose, breathable clothing. Wash gently after sweating, avoid picking the bumps and stop oily or heavily occlusive products on affected areas. Use non-comedogenic sun protection to limit another ultraviolet trigger.

Do not start leftover antibiotics without an assessment. Antibiotics help only when a susceptible bacterial process is present; they do not treat every follicular rash. A dermatologist may tailor a topical or oral medicine after considering infection and other look-alike conditions.

Seek medical care if the eruption keeps returning after sunlight, spreads despite avoiding the trigger, or leaves significant marks. Prompt assessment is warranted for fever, rapidly expanding redness, severe pain, large tender lumps, drainage or red streaking, because these can accompany a deeper infection.

Describe how soon the spots follow sun exposure and bring photographs if the rash has faded. Ask whether the pattern is infectious, light-induced or related to a product; whether a swab would help; which sunscreen texture is suitable; and what plan could reduce recurrences.
