Acidity, vomiting and choosing medicine safely

Short answer
Vomiting needs fluid replacement first; acidity or anti-sickness medicine should be chosen for the cause and the person.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First priority
- Replace fluid with small, frequent sips
- Acidity treatment
- May ease burning but does not stop fluid loss
- Dehydration clues
- Dark urine, less urination, dry mouth or persistent dizziness
The short answer
Take small, frequent sips rather than a large drink at once. A pharmacist or clinician should check age, pregnancy, medical conditions, other medicines and accompanying symptoms before recommending an anti-sickness or acid-reducing product.
Why acidity and vomiting may occur together
Vomiting exposes the food pipe and mouth to acidic stomach contents, which can leave a sour taste or burning feeling. Acidity does not explain every episode: gastroenteritis and food poisoning commonly present with vomiting, often alongside diarrhoea or cramps, while migraine can present with nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light or sound.
The surrounding symptoms matter. Pancreatitis can present with severe upper-abdominal pain and vomiting; gallstones can present with upper-abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting. Meningitis can present with vomiting together with severe headache, neck stiffness, light sensitivity, confusion or a rash. These patterns need assessment rather than routine acidity treatment.
Fluids, food and medicine
Begin with small sips of water or an oral rehydration solution, increasing gradually when fluids stay down. Eat when able and start with simple foods that feel tolerable. Avoid alcohol and very fatty meals while the stomach is unsettled.
An antacid or alginate may ease acid-related burning but does not treat dehydration or the underlying reason for vomiting. Anti-sickness medicines work in different ways and are not interchangeable; some cause drowsiness, affect heart rhythm or interact with other medicines. Use only a product suitable for the person, follow its directions, and seek advice before giving it to a child or using it during pregnancy.
When vomiting needs medical care
Get prompt medical advice if fluids will not stay down, urine becomes dark or infrequent, dizziness persists on standing, the mouth is very dry, the person is unusually sleepy, or vomiting continues or repeatedly returns. Babies, older adults and people with significant health conditions can become dehydrated more readily.
Seek emergency care for blood or coffee-ground material in vomit, green vomit, sudden severe abdominal pain or headache, a stiff neck, confusion, difficulty waking, breathing difficulty, suspected poisoning, or chest pressure. Severe pain with repeated vomiting also warrants urgent assessment.
What to ask about treatment
Describe when vomiting began, its colour and contents, whether there is diarrhoea, fever, headache or abdominal pain, and how much fluid stays down. Ask whether oral rehydration is enough, which medicine fits the suspected cause, what side effects to watch for and when the person should be reassessed.

Questions people ask
Can acidity medicine stop vomiting?
Acid-relief medicine may reduce burning or a sour taste, but it is not an anti-sickness treatment and will not correct dehydration. The cause of vomiting determines whether another medicine is appropriate.
What should I drink after vomiting?
Start with small, frequent sips of water or a suitable oral rehydration solution. Increase the amount gradually if it stays down; seek medical help if you cannot retain fluids or develop dehydration signs.
Is an over-the-counter anti-sickness medicine suitable for a child?
Do not assume an adult product or dose is suitable. Age restrictions and causes differ, so ask a pharmacist or clinician and follow the product directions exactly.
