Acid reflux and a sore throat during pregnancy

Hormonal changes in pregnancy can relax the valve above the stomach, while the growing uterus can increase pressure below it. Stomach contents may then rise into the oesophagus and sometimes reach the throat, particularly after meals or when lying down.

A reflux-related sore throat may come with heartburn, a sour taste, burping, hoarseness, throat clearing or a dry cough. A sore throat with fever, swollen neck glands, nasal symptoms or exposure to someone unwell may point to an infection instead. The presence of soreness alone does not identify the cause.

Sip water regularly and choose smaller meals that do not trigger burning. Remain upright after eating and elevate the head end of the bed for night symptoms. Warm non-caffeinated drinks or a simple salt-water gargle may soothe irritation; avoid ingredients that trigger your reflux.

Check with a pharmacist, midwife or doctor before taking throat lozenges, antacids, alginates, acid-suppressing medicines or herbal remedies during pregnancy. Mention all supplements and prescribed medicines so interactions and timing can be considered.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, drooling with inability to swallow, blue or grey lips, severe chest tightness, fainting or confusion. These features are not explained safely by ordinary throat irritation.

Arrange a prompt review for painful or difficult swallowing, food sticking, vomiting blood, black stools, dehydration, a neck lump, persistent hoarseness, high fever or a sore throat that does not settle. Your maternity team can advise where you should be assessed.

Explain when the soreness starts, whether heartburn or a sour taste accompanies it, and whether you have fever, cough, voice change or trouble swallowing. Ask which remedies are appropriate during pregnancy, how long to try them and whether recurrent symptoms need examination.
