Acid reflux medicine and pH explained

Some products neutralise acid that is already in the stomach, while acid-suppressing medicines reduce its production. Choosing between them depends on the symptom pattern, other health conditions and medicines already being used.

A lower pH indicates greater acidity. Reflux symptoms develop when stomach contents move into the oesophagus, where the lining is less suited to repeated acid exposure. Raising the pH makes the contents less acidic, while reducing acid production changes what the stomach releases over time.

Symptoms alone do not reveal an exact pH value. When the diagnosis remains uncertain, a specialist may use oesophageal monitoring to record acid exposure and compare it with the timing of symptoms.

Check the active ingredient rather than relying on packaging terms. Antacids act directly on existing acid; alginate products form a floating barrier; histamine blockers and proton pump inhibitors reduce acid production through different pathways. Their timing, interactions and suitability are not interchangeable.

A pharmacist can identify an appropriate short-term option after checking pregnancy, kidney or liver problems, allergies and other medicines. Record when symptoms occur, what you ate, whether you were lying down, and which product helped. That pattern gives a clinician more useful information than trying to estimate acidity at home.

Call emergency services for chest tightness or pressure accompanied by breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or discomfort spreading beyond the chest. Do not assume a new or severe chest symptom is caused by reflux.

Book prompt care for difficulty swallowing, food sticking, blood in vomit, black stools, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight loss or continuing abdominal pain. Reflux that frequently returns, disturbs sleep or does not improve with correctly used medicine also deserves a clinical review.

Bring the exact product names and ask whether each one neutralises acid, creates a barrier or suppresses production. Clarify how long to use it, how to separate it from other tablets, and whether your symptom pattern suggests testing or a different diagnosis.
