Gaviscon for acid reflux

When alginate contacts stomach contents, it forms a floating layer that helps limit movement into the oesophagus. Many products also contain antacid ingredients that neutralise some stomach acid. Check the package rather than relying on the brand name alone.

An alginate product acts differently from a proton pump inhibitor: it creates a physical barrier instead of mainly reducing acid production. It may be useful for burning, sour regurgitation or symptoms associated with meals. Liquid and chewable forms can have different ingredient amounts and dosing instructions.

Gaviscon is a range rather than one universal formula. Some versions contain sodium, calcium or bicarbonate salts, which matters for people with kidney or heart conditions, a sodium restriction, high calcium levels or a tendency to kidney stones.

Follow the directions on your specific pack, measure liquids with the supplied device and chew tablets as instructed. Do not use two indigestion products together until a pharmacist confirms that their active ingredients do not overlap.

Antacid ingredients can affect how other medicines are absorbed, so ask how much separation is needed from prescription tablets, antibiotics, iron or thyroid medicine. Check suitability first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, treating a child, or living with kidney, liver or heart disease.

Call emergency services for severe or unfamiliar chest tightness or pain, particularly with sweating, breathlessness, faintness or pain spreading beyond the chest. A reflux remedy should not delay assessment for a possible heart or lung problem.

Arrange a medical review for painful or difficult swallowing, food sticking, vomiting blood, black stools, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight loss or symptoms that keep returning. Lack of benefit may reflect incorrect use, but it can also mean that another diagnosis or treatment is relevant.
