Short answer

Antacids and alginates can provide relatively quick reflux relief, while acid-suppressing medicines are generally chosen for longer symptom control.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Quick symptom options
Antacids and alginates act differently but may be sold together.
Longer control
Acid reducers are selected according to frequency and timing of symptoms.
Interaction check
Antacids may change how other medicines are absorbed.

Choosing medicine for relief

The right product depends on how often symptoms occur, when they appear, your health conditions, pregnancy, and other medicines, so check with a pharmacist rather than combining products.

How reflux medicines differ

Antacids neutralise acid in the stomach. Alginates form a floating barrier that helps limit stomach contents moving into the oesophagus. Some products combine both actions.

H2 blockers reduce acid production and may take longer to work than an antacid. Proton pump inhibitors also reduce acid production but are not usually the choice for relief of a single sudden episode. Brand names and ingredients vary by country, so compare active ingredients rather than packaging claims.

Use the product safely

Read the active ingredients, dose instructions, age limits, and maximum period of use. Antacids can affect absorption of other medicines, so follow spacing directions and have a pharmacist check interactions.

Get tailored advice before choosing a product if you have kidney disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, a restricted-salt diet, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Keep prescribed reflux treatment on its usual schedule unless the prescriber changes it.

Sitting upright after food and avoiding another large meal can complement medicine. If a product repeatedly fails, changing or stacking medicines without assessment may mask a problem that needs a different approach.

Symptoms that medicine should not mask

Emergency care is appropriate for severe or unfamiliar chest pressure accompanied by shortness of breath, sweating, collapse, or pain extending to the arm, jaw, back, or neck. These features can arise from conditions other than reflux.

Contact a clinician promptly about difficulty swallowing, food becoming stuck, bloody vomit, black stools, persistent vomiting, unexplained weight loss, or strong abdominal pain. Reflux that keeps returning despite correct medicine use also deserves review.

What to ask about your treatment

Ask which active ingredient fits your symptom pattern, how it should be timed around meals and other medicines, and how long self-treatment is reasonable. Show the clinician every reflux product you use so duplicate ingredients can be spotted.

Questions people ask

Can I take an antacid and an acid reducer together?

Do not combine them automatically. A pharmacist can check whether the combination is appropriate and tell you how to separate doses if needed.

Why did a proton pump inhibitor not stop my heartburn straight away?

This medicine group reduces acid production over time and is not designed to neutralise acid already present during a sudden episode.
