How acid reflux affects the oesophagus

How the structures involved in Acid Reflux differ from normal

Short answer

Acid reflux exposes the oesophagus to stomach contents, which can irritate its lining and cause burning or regurgitation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What reflux does to the oesophagus

The oesophagus carries food from the mouth to the stomach. Unlike the stomach, its lining is not designed for repeated contact with acidic digestive contents.

Irritation and longer-term changes

Repeated exposure may inflame the oesophagus, a problem called oesophagitis. This can cause pain behind the breastbone, discomfort with swallowing, or the sensation that food is slow to pass. Reflux may also reach the throat and contribute to hoarseness or cough.

Not everyone feels classic heartburn, and symptom intensity does not show how irritated the lining is. Persistent or changing symptoms sometimes require examination or a camera test so a clinician can look for inflammation, narrowing, or another explanation.

Reduce contact with stomach contents

Leave a gap between the evening meal and lying down, choose smaller portions, and stay upright after food. Identify personal triggers rather than removing many foods without a clear pattern. If symptoms occur in bed, raising the head end can reduce upward flow more effectively than stacking pillows.

Medicines that neutralise acid, form a protective raft, or reduce acid production serve different purposes. A pharmacist or doctor can match an option to symptom frequency and check for interactions, pregnancy considerations, or conditions that change what is suitable.

Do not dismiss swallowing or chest warning signs

Get urgent medical help if chest discomfort is severe, feels like pressure, follows exertion, or occurs with shortness of breath, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading beyond the chest. Heart and lung problems can resemble reflux.

Book a prompt assessment if swallowing becomes difficult or painful, food sticks, vomiting persists, vomit contains blood, stools look black, or weight drops without trying. A new persistent symptom also warrants review, especially if treatment no longer controls it.

Planning an oesophagus-focused review

Describe where discomfort sits, whether liquids or solids catch, what reaches your mouth, and whether symptoms wake you. Ask if you need a treatment trial, testing for another cause, or an endoscopy, and clarify when the response should be checked.

Questions people ask

Can the oesophagus heal after reflux irritation?

Inflammation can improve when reflux exposure is controlled, although the right approach depends on its cause and severity.

Is heartburn the same as oesophagitis?

No. Heartburn is a symptom, while oesophagitis means the oesophageal lining is inflamed. Either can occur without the other being obvious.

Why can reflux cause a cough?

Reflux reaching high in the oesophagus may irritate the throat, while oesophageal irritation can also trigger cough reflexes.
