Short answer

Treatment usually starts with meal and posture changes, with pregnancy-appropriate medicines added when symptoms remain troublesome.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

First measures
Adjust meal size, timing, posture, sleep position, and individual triggers
Product safety
Suitability depends on the active ingredients, dose, and other medicines

Treatment at a glance

A pharmacist, midwife, or doctor can match treatment to symptom frequency, pregnancy stage, medical history, and other medicines. The goal is to control backflow and oesophageal irritation while avoiding unsuitable ingredients and preventable interactions.

How treatment is chosen

Occasional burning tied to a particular meal may respond to changing portions, triggers, and the time between eating and lying down. Symptoms that recur on many days, interrupt sleep, or continue despite these measures may need medicine that neutralises acid, forms a barrier, or reduces acid production.

Not every product sold for indigestion has the same ingredients. Some antacids also affect absorption of iron and other medicines, so the specific product and dosing schedule matter. A previous reflux prescription should still be reviewed after pregnancy begins.

A stepwise treatment approach

Begin with smaller meals, slower eating, upright posture after food, loose waist clothing, and avoidance of personal food triggers. For nighttime symptoms, finish the evening meal well before bed, raise the upper body, and consider left-side sleep if comfortable.

If relief is inadequate, take the exact product a qualified clinician or pharmacist recommends and follow its label. Tell them about prenatal vitamins, iron, calcium, prescriptions, and non-prescription products so they can advise on spacing. Do not combine several reflux products or substitute herbal remedies without checking their ingredients.

When treatment needs review

Book a review when a recommended treatment does not control symptoms, you need it more often than directed, or reflux affects nutrition or sleep. A clinician should also assess painful or difficult swallowing, repeated vomiting, anaemia symptoms, black stools, blood in vomit, or unintended weight loss.

Urgent assessment is needed for severe, squeezing, or unfamiliar chest pain; shortness of breath; fainting; sweating; or discomfort spreading to the jaw, arm, neck, or back. Severe upper abdominal pain accompanied by headache, vision disturbance, sudden swelling, or marked illness needs urgent maternity evaluation.

Confirming a safe plan

Bring a list or photographs of everything you take. Ask what each reflux medicine is meant to do, when to take it in relation to meals and supplements, how to judge whether it is working, and which adverse effects or symptom changes require follow-up.

Questions people ask

Can I take my old reflux prescription during pregnancy?

Have it reviewed before restarting or continuing it. A clinician can confirm whether the medicine and dose still suit you and whether an alternative is preferable.

Why must antacids be spaced from other medicines?

Some antacids can change how well other medicines or supplements are absorbed. A pharmacist can give timing instructions for your exact products.

What if lifestyle changes do not work?

Persistent symptoms can be treated with clinician-selected medicines. Ongoing or worsening symptoms also deserve review to confirm that reflux is the right explanation and to check for complications.
