Remedies for an acid reflux cough

There is no single home remedy that suits every cough. A useful plan addresses reflux while keeping other causes in mind, particularly when coughing persists or occurs with wheezing, fever or nasal symptoms.

Acid reflux may present with cough after meals, on bending over or when lying down. Sour fluid in the mouth, burning behind the breastbone, hoarseness and repeated throat-clearing can support the pattern, although they are not present in everyone.

Because a cough can come from the lungs, nose, throat or a medicine side effect, improvement after a simple remedy does not confirm the cause. The duration of symptoms and accompanying features guide whether further assessment is appropriate.

Try smaller meals and remain upright afterward. Track foods and drinks that reliably precede symptoms instead of eliminating many items at once. Common personal triggers can include rich meals, spicy foods, caffeine, fizzy drinks and alcohol. Avoid smoking and exposure to smoke.

For symptoms during sleep, a wedge or raised bed head can support the chest and head. Soothing drinks may relieve throat irritation briefly, but they do not stop reflux itself. A pharmacist or doctor can help choose an antacid, alginate or acid-reducing medicine and check whether it is compatible with your other medicines and health conditions.

Get urgent medical help if coughing occurs with severe chest pain, substantial shortness of breath, fainting, blue or grey lips, or blood in coughed-up mucus or vomit. Black sticky stools also require prompt evaluation.

Book an appointment when the cough lasts for several weeks, repeatedly wakes you, or is accompanied by difficulty swallowing, painful swallowing, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting or fever. A clinician can review your chest, nose and medicines rather than assuming reflux is responsible.

Discuss which features point toward reflux, whether any current medicine could provoke coughing, and what treatment trial is reasonable. Ask how you will judge improvement and which symptoms should bring you back sooner.
