Can acid reflux cause vomiting?

Short answer
Acid reflux can cause nausea and sometimes vomiting, but repeated or forceful vomiting should not be assumed to come from reflux alone.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Regurgitation
- An often effortless return of sour or bitter stomach contents
- Vomiting
- Active emptying commonly involving nausea, retching, and abdominal contractions
- Hydration warning
- Reduced urination, dry mouth, dizziness, or increasing weakness
Can reflux make you vomit?
Reflux describes stomach contents moving upward into the oesophagus or mouth without the strong abdominal contractions of vomiting. Vomiting is an active emptying of the stomach and can result from infection, migraine, pregnancy, medicines, a digestive blockage, or other illnesses.
Telling reflux from vomiting
Regurgitation often brings a small amount of sour or bitter fluid into the throat, particularly after eating, bending, or lying down. It may occur with burning behind the breastbone or belching. Vomiting tends to involve nausea, retching, and a larger expulsion of stomach contents.
The distinction matters because frequent vomiting can cause dehydration and may signal a problem unrelated to reflux. Note abdominal pain, diarrhoea, headache, fever, medication changes, missed periods, and whether anyone else who shared food is unwell.
What to do after mild vomiting
Take small, frequent sips of fluid rather than a large drink at once. Once fluids stay down, resume simple foods according to appetite. Sit upright after eating and avoid a meal close to bedtime if reflux is also present. Watch for reduced urination, a very dry mouth, dizziness, or increasing weakness.
Check with a pharmacist or clinician before taking a nausea or reflux medicine, especially during pregnancy, for a child, or when you use other medicines. Ongoing vomiting needs evaluation instead of repeated self-treatment.
When vomiting requires medical care
Seek urgent care for blood or coffee-ground-like material in vomit, green vomit, black stools, severe or worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, confusion, fainting, a severe headache with neck stiffness, or inability to keep fluids down. Chest pain or breathing difficulty also needs urgent assessment.
Contact a clinician promptly when vomiting keeps returning, dehydration signs develop, swallowing becomes difficult, weight falls without trying, or symptoms begin after a new medicine. Infants, older adults, pregnant people, and those with significant medical conditions can become unwell more quickly.
Details to share with your clinician
Explain whether you experienced effortless regurgitation or forceful vomiting, what the material looked like, and whether fluids remain down. Ask whether medicines, infection, pregnancy, migraine, or a digestive problem need consideration alongside reflux.

Questions people ask
Is bringing up sour liquid the same as vomiting?
Not necessarily. A small, effortless rise of sour fluid is regurgitation; forceful emptying with retching is vomiting. Describe exactly what happened when seeking advice.
What should I drink after vomiting?
Start with small, frequent sips of a suitable fluid. Seek care if you cannot keep fluids down or develop dehydration signs.
Can vomiting damage the oesophagus?
Repeated forceful vomiting can irritate or tear the oesophagus. Blood in vomit, black stools, severe pain, or faintness requires urgent care.
