Acid reflux and ear pain

The ear shares nerve pathways with the throat, jaw, and teeth, so irritation in one area can sometimes be felt in another. Reflux reaching the throat may cause hoarseness, a lump sensation, throat-clearing, or cough alongside discomfort perceived near the ear. This is an indirect connection, and ear pain alone does not identify reflux.

Infection, earwax blockage, pressure changes, jaw-joint strain, dental disease, and tonsil or throat inflammation are other possibilities. Discharge, reduced hearing, fever, tenderness around the ear, pain with chewing, or recent swimming offers useful clues about where the problem begins.

Do not insert cotton buds, drops, oils, or other objects into a painful ear unless a healthcare professional has confirmed they are suitable. Keep track of hearing changes, discharge, jaw pain, dental symptoms, sore throat, and reflux features. Simple pain relief may be appropriate if you can take it safely; a pharmacist can check this against your health conditions and medicines.

For associated reflux, try smaller evening meals, remain upright after eating, and reduce only the foods that reliably provoke symptoms. If pain continues or returns, an examination of the ear, mouth, jaw, and throat is more useful than assuming stomach acid is responsible.

Seek urgent care for swelling or redness behind the ear, an ear that appears pushed outward, sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, facial weakness, a foreign object, significant injury, or severe headache with neck stiffness. People with a weakened immune system or poorly controlled diabetes should obtain early advice for notable ear pain or discharge.

Arrange an examination for persistent one-sided pain, recurrent discharge, worsening hearing, fever, or pain accompanied by trouble swallowing, a neck lump, unexplained weight loss, or a lasting change in voice.

Ask whether the ear canal and eardrum look normal, whether the jaw or teeth could refer pain, and whether your throat symptoms fit reflux or another condition. Find out which changes should trigger reassessment and whether hearing testing, dental review, or an ear, nose, and throat opinion is needed.
