Acid reflux after a stomach virus

Forceful vomiting can leave the food pipe sore, while nausea, large catch-up meals or lying down during recovery may allow stomach contents to travel upward. The infection itself may have settled even though the throat or chest remains sensitive.

A burning feeling behind the breastbone, sour taste or regurgitation after eating fits a reflux pattern. Cramping, diarrhoea, fever and repeated vomiting point more toward continuing gastroenteritis or another illness rather than reflux alone.

Upper abdominal discomfort can accompany either problem, so location alone is not enough to decide. A clinician will consider the sequence of symptoms, hydration, medicines, recent travel or food exposure, and whether swallowing has become painful.

Take fluids in small, frequent amounts if your stomach is still unsettled. As appetite returns, choose modest portions and avoid immediately lying flat. Temporarily reducing foods or drinks that clearly provoke burning may help, but there is no need to impose a broad restrictive diet.

Before using an antacid or acid-reducing product, check with a pharmacist if you take other medicines or have kidney, liver or heart problems. Anti-inflammatory painkillers can irritate the stomach in some people, so ask about a suitable pain-relief choice rather than adding one casually.

Get medical advice if burning persists after the other illness has resolved, repeatedly interrupts eating or sleep, or is accompanied by pain on swallowing, food sticking, ongoing fever, continuing diarrhoea or recurrent vomiting.

Seek urgent care if you cannot keep fluids down, pass very little urine, become faint or confused, develop severe abdominal or chest pain, vomit blood, or notice black stools. These signs can indicate dehydration, bleeding or another problem that needs prompt assessment.

Tell the clinician when vomiting or diarrhoea stopped, where the current discomfort sits, and what brings it on. Ask whether your symptoms fit reflux, whether a medicine could be irritating your stomach, and what change would signal that tests or a different treatment are needed.
