PEEK cages in ACDF: purpose, limits and recovery

PEEK stands for polyether ether ketone. The cage occupies the cleared disc space and helps maintain alignment while bone grows through or around the graft area. It supports the process; it does not turn into bone or work as an artificial moving disc.

The surgeon selects a cage shape and size to fit the prepared space without placing excessive pressure on the vertebral endplates. Bone graft or a graft substitute may be packed within it to create a pathway for fusion.

Some constructs use the cage alone, while others add a plate and screws for stability. The choice reflects the anatomy, the number and location of treated segments, bone quality and the surgeon's planned technique rather than the cage material alone.

Take medicines and care for the incision according to the discharge plan. Follow the prescribed limits on lifting, driving and neck movement, and attend imaging appointments so the team can assess alignment, implant position and developing bone across the segment.

Tell the surgeon about nicotine use because it can interfere with bone healing. Do not begin forceful neck exercises or manipulate the neck without clearance; rehabilitation should match the operation performed and your neurological findings.

Breathing difficulty, fast-growing swelling in the neck, new major weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, collapse or severe chest pain requires emergency care. These symptoms need assessment regardless of which cage material was used.

Notify the surgical team promptly about worsening arm pain with new weakness, increasing trouble swallowing, inability to drink, wound drainage, spreading redness or fever accompanied by greater pain. Implant position cannot be judged from symptoms alone and may require examination and imaging.

Ask why PEEK was selected for your anatomy, what graft material will be used, whether fixation is planned and how fusion will be monitored. Clarify whether any allergy history matters, what implant information you will receive and which activities could overload the construct early on.
