ACDF orthopedic surgery: what patients should know

It may be discussed when matched symptoms and neurological findings persist despite appropriate non-operative care, or when spinal cord or nerve function is at risk. The reason for operating should be traceable to a specific finding on the examination and scan.

Under anaesthesia, the surgeon makes an incision at the front of the neck and gently moves nearby structures aside to reach the spine. The affected disc is removed, compressed neural tissue is freed, and a cage or graft is inserted between the vertebrae.

A plate and screws may secure the treated area. Fusion means bone is expected to bridge the segment over time; the implant provides support but is not itself the new bone. Treating a segment also reduces movement at that specific level.

Before surgery, disclose all medicines, supplements, allergies, previous anaesthetic problems and medical conditions. Follow the hospital's specific instructions about medicines and fasting, and arrange transport plus practical help for the early recovery period.

Once home, use pain medicines only as directed, protect the incision, and follow the advised walking and activity plan. Do not add exercises, drive or lift heavier items until the team confirms that these activities fit your stage of healing.

Call emergency services for shortness of breath, rapidly enlarging neck swelling, sudden severe weakness, inability to stand safely, new loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or loss of consciousness.

Seek prompt advice from the surgical service for worsening swallowing, inability to keep fluids down, new voice changes, increasing wound discharge, spreading redness or fever with escalating pain. Report new numbness or weakness rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Ask which symptoms the procedure is intended to improve, why the chosen level is responsible, and what could happen with continued non-operative care. Clarify implant options, relevant personal risks, expected neck movement, follow-up imaging and the milestones for work or driving.
