What to know about absorbable PDO threads

They may suit someone seeking a modest change without surgical lifting, provided a qualified clinician confirms that the skin, tissue and treatment goals are appropriate.

PDO stands for polydioxanone, an absorbable material also used in medical sutures. During a thread lift, a clinician places fine threads beneath the skin using a needle or cannula. Some threads have small barbs or cones that grip tissue and provide mechanical support; smoother threads are generally used without the same lifting action.

The body gradually breaks down the thread material. Tissue response around the threads may contribute to firmness, but the change fades over time and cannot reproduce the degree of correction available from surgery. Bruising, swelling, tenderness, tightness, dimpling and temporary asymmetry can occur during early healing.

Choose a licensed clinician who routinely performs facial thread procedures and can explain which thread design, placement plane and treatment area fit your anatomy. Share your medicines, supplements, allergies, previous facial procedures, tendency to scar, and any history of bleeding problems or skin infection. Do not stop prescribed blood-thinning medicine unless the prescriber gives specific instructions.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or rapidly escalating pain, skin that becomes unusually pale, mottled or dark, sudden vision change, breathing difficulty, or facial weakness. Do not pull, trim or push an exposed thread yourself.
