Fatigue while taking Abilify

Some people instead feel restless or have difficulty sleeping, which can leave them exhausted during the day. The timing of fatigue in relation to starting the medicine, changing the dose, or adding another medicine helps the prescriber assess whether aripiprazole may be contributing.

Fatigue can come from the condition being treated, disrupted sleep, low fluid intake, infection, anaemia, thyroid problems, or another medicine. Alcohol, sedating antihistamines, sleep medicines, and some pain medicines can add to drowsiness. Anaemia commonly presents with tiredness and may also cause breathlessness, paleness, or a racing heartbeat.

A useful medication review considers every prescription, non-prescription product, and supplement. The clinician may also ask about sleep, mood, appetite, fever, bleeding, and daily function before deciding whether an examination or blood tests are appropriate.

Do not stop aripiprazole suddenly or change the dose or dosing time on your own. Contact the prescriber if fatigue is persistent, worsening, or interfering with work, learning, self-care, or taking the medicine. They may review the dose, timing, interactions, sleep pattern, and alternative explanations.

Until you know how the medicine affects alertness, avoid driving, cycling in traffic, operating machinery, or other tasks where sleepiness could cause harm. Keep a short record of dose time, sleep, naps, caffeine, other medicines, and when fatigue is strongest. Regular meals, adequate fluids, and a consistent sleep schedule may support energy, but they do not replace a medication review.

Seek urgent medical care for extreme drowsiness with difficulty waking, fainting, severe confusion, a seizure, breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, or thoughts of harming yourself or someone else. Fever with marked muscle stiffness, sweating, confusion, or a rapid heartbeat can signal a rare but serious medicine reaction and needs emergency assessment. New uncontrollable movements, severe restlessness, or a sudden major change in behaviour also needs prompt contact with a clinician.

Ask whether the fatigue fits the dose and timing of aripiprazole, whether another medicine could intensify drowsiness, and whether any checks for physical causes are warranted. Clarify which activities to avoid, what change in symptoms should trigger an earlier review, and how any planned dose adjustment should be made.
