Ultrasound of the abdominal blood vessels

The examination may focus on the aorta, the vessels supplying the kidneys or bowel, or veins carrying blood through the abdomen. The exact target depends on the reason for referral. It is performed through the skin with gel and a handheld probe and does not use ionising radiation.

Standard ultrasound shows the vessel walls and their width, while Doppler techniques display moving blood and help identify altered flow. The sonographer may listen to a pulse-like sound generated by the machine; this is the Doppler signal, not a sound coming from your body that others could normally hear.

The examination can look for widening, narrowing, blockage, or changes around a vessel. Results need clinical context because bowel gas or a deep vessel can restrict the view. A report may recommend different imaging when a segment cannot be assessed adequately.

Use the preparation instructions supplied by the imaging service. You may be asked to avoid food beforehand because bowel gas can obscure deeper vessels. Do not change prescribed medicines unless the referring clinician or imaging team specifically tells you to do so.

During the scan, expect firm probe pressure at several points on the abdomen and requests to hold your breath or change position. Tell the sonographer if pressure becomes painful. Once the images are collected, ask when the report will reach the clinician who arranged the test and whether any follow-up has already been planned.

Call emergency services for sudden intense abdominal or back pain, especially with fainting, cold clammy skin, severe weakness, confusion, or breathing difficulty. Sudden abdominal pain accompanied by bloody stool or persistent vomiting also warrants urgent assessment. Do not wait for a booked vascular ultrasound when these symptoms are present, and do not drive yourself if you feel faint or severely unwell.

Useful questions include which vessel is being checked, what prompted the examination, and whether fasting is required. When the report is available, ask whether all intended vessel segments were visible, what any flow change means for you, and whether monitoring, medication review, or further imaging is appropriate.
