Abdominal ultrasound for men: what to expect

The technique is the same for men and women, although the reason for the scan determines which areas receive closer attention. A clinician may request it for upper abdominal pain, urinary symptoms, suspected gallstones or kidney stones, abnormal blood tests, swelling, or monitoring of a known condition.

The sonographer can assess structures such as the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, kidneys, pancreas, spleen, bladder and abdominal aorta, depending on the request. Ultrasound can reveal features such as stones, organ enlargement, fluid, some cysts or masses, and changes in urine flow. It does not identify every cause of abdominal pain, because bowel gas and body anatomy can limit the view.

A standard abdominal scan does not routinely assess the prostate or testicles in detail. Urinary or prostate concerns may call for a bladder study with measurements before and after urination, while a scrotal concern requires a dedicated scrotal ultrasound. The written report must be interpreted alongside your symptoms, examination and other tests.

Follow the instructions supplied with your appointment. Some scans require fasting so the gallbladder is easier to see; others require a full bladder to improve views of the bladder and nearby structures. Check before changing medicines, especially if fasting affects how you take them or manage diabetes.

During the appointment, you usually lie on an examination couch with your abdomen exposed. The sonographer applies gel and moves a handheld probe over the skin, sometimes asking you to change position or hold your breath. You can normally return to usual activities afterward unless your care team has given different instructions. Arrange follow-up with the clinician who requested the scan so the findings are considered in context.

Do not wait for a routine ultrasound appointment if you develop severe or rapidly worsening abdominal or back pain, fainting, marked weakness, a rigid or very swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, vomiting blood, black stools, yellow skin or eyes with fever, or an inability to pass urine. Seek urgent medical assessment, as these signs may require immediate examination and tests chosen for the situation.

Contact a clinician soon for persistent pain, unexplained abdominal swelling, blood in the urine, fever with urinary pain, or symptoms that keep returning. The urgency comes from the symptom pattern and your overall condition, not from whether a particular diagnosis is common.

Ask which organs the request covers, whether you should fast or arrive with a full bladder, and how to handle regular medicines. After the scan, ask whether the images explain your symptoms, whether any finding needs follow-up, and what the next step is if the result does not reveal a cause.
