Eating before an abdominal ultrasound

Upper abdominal and gallbladder examinations commonly need an empty stomach, while kidney or pelvic views may use different preparation. The appointment letter or imaging team takes priority over general advice.

Eating causes the gallbladder to contract, which can make its inside harder to evaluate. Food and swallowed air may also increase bowel gas, blocking some sound waves and limiting views of deeper structures such as the pancreas.

Preparation varies because an abdominal ultrasound may target different organs. Some examinations prioritise a full bladder, some require fasting, and combined abdominal and pelvic scans may involve both instructions. Clear fluids or usual medicines may be permitted, but this should be checked rather than assumed.

Read the entire appointment message and note when any restriction begins. Contact the imaging centre if the directions are missing, if you have diabetes, if fasting conflicts with a medicine schedule, or if pregnancy, frailty, or another medical issue makes the preparation difficult.

If you ate or drank something outside the instructions, tell the team what you had and when. Do not cancel without asking: the scan may still provide useful views, the order may be adjusted, or a new appointment may be safer and more informative.

Preparation for a routine scan should not delay emergency assessment. Seek urgent help for severe or escalating abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, a rigid or markedly swollen abdomen, yellow skin with fever, or repeated vomiting that prevents fluids staying down.

Ask which organs the scan will assess, whether water or other clear fluids are allowed, how to handle essential medicines, and whether a full bladder is also required. If you use insulin or medicine that can lower blood glucose, request an individual plan for safe preparation.
