What should you know about a lot of eye discharge?

The discharge's colour and texture, whether one or both eyes are affected, and associated itching, redness, swelling, or discomfort help narrow the possibilities.

Watery discharge with marked itching can occur with allergic conjunctivitis, especially when both eyes are involved. Thick or sticky discharge and eyelids that crust together can occur with conjunctivitis. Irritants, a foreign particle, dry-eye inflammation, or a narrowed tear-drainage pathway may also increase discharge.

A small amount of dried material after sleep can be normal. A clear increase from your usual pattern, repeated reaccumulation during the day, or discharge alongside new eye symptoms deserves closer attention.

Wash your hands, soften crusts with a clean compress dampened with comfortably warm water, and wipe gently from the inner corner outward. Use a fresh part of the cloth or pad for each pass and a separate one for the other eye. Avoid rubbing the eyes or sharing towels, pillowcases, cosmetics, or eye drops.

Pause contact-lens use until the eye has settled and a clinician has advised when to restart. Do not use leftover antibiotic or steroid eye drops: the wrong product can delay diagnosis or worsen some eye problems.

Arrange prompt assessment if heavy discharge persists, keeps returning, or comes with substantial redness, eyelid swelling, or worsening discomfort. Contact-lens wearers with a red, painful, or light-sensitive eye need urgent assessment because the cornea may be involved.

Seek urgent care for reduced or blurred vision, severe eye pain, strong light sensitivity, an eye injury, chemical exposure, or the feeling that something remains embedded in the eye. After chemical exposure, rinse continuously with clean water while arranging emergency help.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergy, infection, eyelid inflammation, or a tear-drainage problem; whether an eye examination or swab is needed; and which cleaning method or drops are appropriate. Mention contact lenses, recent eye products, sick contacts, injuries, and any change in vision.
