What should you know about 3 week old snoring?

Short answer

Snoring-like sounds in a 3-week-old can come from a narrow or stuffy nose, but persistent noise or any breathing difficulty needs medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Newborns mainly breathe through their noses, so a small amount of mucus can sound surprisingly loud. A clinician should still hear about regular snoring at this age, especially if it happens when the baby is calm rather than only during a cold or after crying.

What the sound may mean

Notice whether the sound comes from the nose or seems high-pitched, harsh, or chesty. Brief nasal rattling with comfortable breathing may reflect normal newborn congestion. Repeated snoring can also occur when airflow is narrowed, and noisy breathing while awake deserves particular attention.

The sound alone cannot show the cause. What matters most is how the baby breathes, feeds, wakes, and maintains colour. Record a short video with sound when the episode occurs; this can help a clinician understand a noise that may not happen during the appointment.

What you can do now

Keep the baby on their back on a firm, flat sleep surface with the sleep space clear. Do not use pillows, wedges, sleep positioners, or an inclined mattress to try to reduce the noise. Keep smoke, incense, perfume, and aerosol sprays away from the baby.

If the nose looks blocked, plain saline drops and gentle nasal suction may help before a feed; avoid medicated nasal products unless a clinician has prescribed them for this baby. Arrange a routine medical review if the sound keeps returning, disrupts feeding or sleep, or is also present while awake.

When to seek urgent care

Get emergency help now if the baby turns blue, grey, or very pale; has pauses in breathing; is difficult to wake; becomes floppy; or is struggling for each breath. Signs of effort include the skin pulling in between or below the ribs, nostrils flaring, grunting, or the head bobbing with breaths.

Seek prompt medical advice if the baby has a measured fever, feeds much less than usual, repeatedly chokes or sweats during feeds, has fewer wet nappies, or develops worsening noisy breathing. Because this baby is only 3 weeks old, a noticeable change in breathing or feeding should be assessed without delay.

Questions for your clinician

Explain when the noise started, whether it happens asleep and awake, and whether it changes with feeding or position. Ask the clinician to check the nose and upper airway, review the baby's breathing effort and weight gain, and explain which changes should trigger urgent reassessment. Bring your recording and note any pauses, colour changes, coughing, choking, or reduced feeding.

Questions people ask

Is snoring-like noise normal in a newborn?

Some newborn nasal noise can occur because their air passages are small and easily sound congested. Regular snoring, noise while awake, or any change in breathing effort, feeding, alertness, or colour should be discussed with a clinician.

Can I raise the cot mattress to help the snoring?

No. Keep the sleep surface firm and flat, and place the baby on their back. Pillows, wedges, positioners, and inclined sleep surfaces can create hazards and should not be used to treat noisy breathing.

What should I record before the appointment?

Capture the sound and the baby's face and chest if it is safe to do so. Note whether the noise occurs during sleep, feeding, or wakefulness and whether there are pauses, colour changes, choking, or visible effort.
