What a 3 cm ovarian cyst can look like

Size alone does not define the type of cyst. The report may call it simple when it has a thin wall and clear fluid, or complex when it contains internal echoes, partitions, thicker areas or solid-looking components. Blood flow around or within an area may also be assessed with Doppler imaging.

Interpretation depends on the cyst's appearance, your symptoms, menstrual stage, age, pregnancy status and whether you have reached menopause. Some cysts relate to normal ovarian activity and settle without intervention. Others need monitoring or specialist review because of their features or because symptoms persist.

Read the report for the ovary involved, the cyst dimensions and whether it is described as simple or complex. Arrange the recommended follow-up rather than judging the finding from size alone. A clinician may compare earlier imaging, review pelvic pain or bleeding and decide whether repeat ultrasound, blood tests or referral is appropriate.

Keep a brief record of pain timing, menstrual changes, bloating and any effect on eating or bladder habits. Do not start hormonal treatment solely to remove an existing cyst; its role depends on your circumstances and the reason it is being considered. Surgery is not automatically required for a cyst of this measurement.

Seek urgent medical assessment for sudden severe one-sided pelvic or lower abdominal pain, especially with nausea, vomiting, faintness, weakness, fever or heavy vaginal bleeding. These symptoms can occur with twisting of an ovary, cyst rupture, bleeding or another abdominal condition and should not wait for a routine follow-up appointment.

Ask whether the cyst is simple or complex, whether blood flow and both ovaries were adequately seen, and whether its appearance fits the stage of your menstrual cycle. Clarify if repeat imaging is needed, which symptoms should bring you back sooner and what would lead to gynaecology referral.
