What should you know about 2mm microneedling?

The number describes the intended needle penetration setting, not a universal prescription for every part of the face or body. Skin thickness varies by site, and the device, pressure, technique and skin movement can affect the actual treatment. A clinician may change depth within the same session rather than use 2 mm everywhere.

Deeper treatment creates more controlled injury than a shallow cosmetic pass. It may be considered for selected textural concerns or scars, but it also increases bleeding, swelling, infection, pigment change and scarring risks. Active acne, cold sores, eczema flares, open wounds, infection, a tendency to form raised scars, or medicines that affect healing can change whether treatment is appropriate.

Before treatment, give the clinician a complete list of skin products, medicines, allergies, previous procedures and problems with pigmentation or scarring. Ask who will perform the procedure, which device will be used, how cartridges are kept sterile and why this depth suits the specific area. Do not copy a clinic depth with a home roller or pen.

Afterward, follow the clinic's cleansing and moisturising instructions, use sun protection, keep hands away from the treated skin and avoid picking flakes or crusts. Pause irritating acids, retinoids, scrubs and fragranced products until the clinician says the barrier has recovered. Heat, heavy sweating, swimming and makeup may need a temporary pause according to the aftercare plan.

Promptly contact the treating clinic for worsening pain, spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus, blisters, marked swelling, fever, or a rash away from the treated area. Seek urgent care for facial swelling with breathing difficulty or signs of a severe allergic reaction. Redness and tenderness can occur after microneedling, but symptoms that intensify rather than settle deserve assessment.

Ask what concern the 2 mm setting is meant to address, whether a shallower setting or another procedure would suit your skin, how post-inflammatory darkening will be reduced, and what changes should trigger a call. Also clarify who will manage complications and when your skin should be reviewed before another session.
