What should you know about 20 week 3d scan?

The clinical examination relies mainly on standard two-dimensional ultrasound views to examine the baby's anatomy, growth, placenta, and surrounding fluid. A three-dimensional image may be added when the sonographer considers it useful or when the service offers it.

Three-dimensional ultrasound combines information from several ultrasound slices into a still image with depth. It can make the surface of the face, hands, feet, or another body area easier to recognise, depending on the baby's position and the available view.

Image clarity can be limited when the baby faces away, a limb covers the area, or there is not a suitable pocket of fluid in front of the structure. A less clear picture is a technical limitation and does not by itself indicate a health problem.

Follow the clinic's instructions about arrival time, clothing, and whether your bladder should be full. Bring previous scan reports and your maternity records if requested. Tell the sonographer about relevant medical history and any concerns before imaging begins.

Allow the examiner to prioritise the required medical views. If the baby's position prevents a complete assessment, you may be asked to move, take a short break, or return for another appointment. This does not automatically mean that an abnormality has been found.

The ultrasound itself should not cause ongoing symptoms. Contact your maternity team promptly if you have vaginal bleeding, fluid leaking from the vagina, fever, persistent abdominal pain, or a change in movements after you have established your baby's usual pattern.

Seek urgent assessment for heavy bleeding, severe constant abdominal pain, fainting, breathing difficulty, or feeling acutely unwell. Use the emergency contact route given by your maternity service rather than waiting for a routine scan appointment.

Ask whether the appointment includes the full anomaly assessment, which views were completed, and whether any area needs another look. You can also ask whether a 3D view added clinical information, when the written report will be available, and who will explain any recommended follow-up.
