What to know about a 12-week 3D scan

The clinical examination is usually performed primarily with two-dimensional ultrasound because that view is used for dating, checking fetal heartbeat and development, and taking measurements. A 3D view may be added when useful or requested, depending on fetal position and local practice.

A nuchal translucency examination measures fluid at the back of the fetal neck as part of screening for certain chromosomal conditions. Its interpretation may also use pregnancy dates and blood-test information. A surface-style 3D picture does not provide the same assessment.

Image clarity varies with fetal position, movement, the angle of the probe and surrounding tissues. A less recognisable picture is not, by itself, evidence of a problem. Screening estimates chance rather than making a diagnosis, and an unexpected finding may lead to further discussion or testing.

Check whether the booking is a clinical first-trimester scan, a nuchal translucency scan or a non-medical imaging session. Ask what assessments are included and whether a qualified clinician will provide a written report.

Follow the clinic's instructions about bladder filling and bring earlier scan or blood-test information if requested. Before choosing extra imaging, confirm that it will not delay time-sensitive screening or follow-up recommended by your maternity team.

Contact your maternity service promptly for vaginal bleeding, persistent abdominal pain, fever or fluid leaking from the vagina. A planned ultrasound appointment should not be used as a substitute for assessing new symptoms.

Seek urgent help for severe pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, marked dizziness, shoulder-tip pain or breathing difficulty. The need for urgent assessment comes from the symptoms themselves, not from how reassuring a previous image appeared.

Ask which screening options fit your pregnancy, what the 3D component adds clinically, who interprets the examination and when results will be discussed. If a measurement cannot be obtained, find out whether another appointment or a different screening option is available.
