Symptoms linked with a 100-day cough

This phrase describes a cough that can linger and is often associated with whooping cough, but symptoms alone cannot identify the cause. The pattern, accompanying features, exposures, medicines, and chest examination guide what evaluation is needed.

With whooping cough, a mild runny nose or sore throat may be followed by forceful clusters of coughs. A person can struggle to draw breath between coughs, make a gasping sound, bring up mucus, or vomit afterwards. The chest and abdominal muscles may become sore from repeated effort.

Different accompanying symptoms point towards other possibilities. Asthma can present with wheeze or tightness; allergic rhinitis with sneezing, an itchy nose, and throat clearing; acid reflux with sour taste or symptoms after food; and bronchiectasis with recurrent chest infections and regular sputum production. Use cough or cold medicines only after checking whether they suit your age, health conditions, and current medicines. Antibiotics should be prescribed for a specific clinical reason rather than taken from an old supply.

Get emergency help if you cannot catch your breath, develop blue or grey lips, collapse, become confused, have severe chest pain, or cough up a significant amount of blood. A coughing episode with loss of consciousness or a seizure also needs emergency care.

Request prompt assessment for worsening breathlessness, persistent fever, repeated vomiting, poor fluid intake, blood-streaked mucus, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, painful breathing, or a cough that is not improving. Babies and medically vulnerable people exposed to a suspected infectious cough may need timely clinical advice even before symptoms appear.

Ask which cause fits the full symptom pattern, whether infection testing or breathing tests are useful, and whether the cough could spread to household contacts. Discuss how to manage night symptoms, vomiting, or chest-wall soreness and which change would require another review.
