What statin therapy is
Statin therapy uses prescription medicine to lower cholesterol and help protect blood vessels over time.
Statins reduce the amount of cholesterol made by the liver. They are commonly prescribed alongside food, activity and smoking-support plans when appropriate. The goal is to reduce the build-up and instability of fatty material in arteries, rather than to create a noticeable day-to-day sensation.
How fast will I feel a difference?
Most people do not feel a direct change after starting a statin because high cholesterol itself often causes no symptoms. Blood testing shows how the medicine is affecting cholesterol. Take it as prescribed even when you feel well, and discuss new symptoms rather than stopping it on your own.
What are the side effects?
Some people notice muscle aches, digestive upset, headache or tiredness. These symptoms can have other causes, so a clinician may review the dose, timing, other medicines and relevant blood tests. Seek urgent care for severe weakness, dark urine, facial swelling, breathing difficulty or signs of a serious allergic reaction.
How long will I be on it?
Statins are often a longer-term treatment because cholesterol and cardiovascular risk can rise again when medicine is stopped. The duration depends on your health history, cholesterol results, other conditions and tolerance. A prescriber can revisit the plan when your circumstances or medicines change.
Key facts to know
A statin is selected and dosed for the individual. Tell the prescriber about pregnancy plans, liver problems, regular alcohol intake, supplements and every prescribed or non-prescribed medicine, since interactions can affect which option is suitable.
Who may be offered a statin
A clinician may discuss statin therapy for high cholesterol or when a person has cardiovascular disease or risk factors that make cholesterol lowering useful. It may be part of care for people with angina, peripheral arterial disease or a previous transient ischaemic attack. The decision is based on the whole clinical picture, not a single test result.
Starting treatment
The appointment usually covers your medical history, current medicines and relevant blood tests. Your clinician agrees a starting medicine and dose, explains when to take it, and arranges follow-up. Bring a current medicines list and mention muscle symptoms, liver disease, pregnancy, breastfeeding or plans to become pregnant.
After starting a statin
There is no physical recovery period. Build the tablet into a regular routine and attend planned blood-test follow-up. Contact the prescribing team if side effects interfere with daily life; an adjustment may be possible without abandoning cholesterol management.
Risks and precautions
Rarely, significant muscle or liver-related problems can occur. Prompt assessment is sensible for unexplained severe muscle pain, marked weakness, dark urine, yellowing of the eyes or skin, or severe abdominal symptoms. Do not share prescription medicines, and check before starting a new medicine or supplement.
Other approaches
Nutrition, physical activity, weight management where relevant and stopping smoking support heart health, whether or not a statin is used. If a statin is unsuitable or not tolerated, a clinician can discuss different dosing approaches or other cholesterol-lowering medicines. A cholesterol test helps guide that discussion.
Finding the right support
A GP, cardiology clinician or other qualified prescriber can assess whether statin therapy fits your situation. Bring previous cholesterol results if available and a complete list of medicines and supplements. Pharmacists can also help with practical questions about taking the medicine and potential interactions.
Questions people ask
Can I stop a statin when my cholesterol improves?
Discuss this with the prescriber first. Improved results can reflect the treatment, and stopping may change the benefit.
Should I take a statin at a particular time?
Follow the instructions for your specific medicine and ask a pharmacist if your routine makes dosing difficult.
What should I bring to a statin review?
Bring your medicine and supplement list, recent test results if you have them, and notes about any symptoms.
