Visa medical test in the UAE: centres, documents, fees

Anyone aged 18 or over who applies for or renews a UAE residence visa needs a medical fitness test. In Dubai it is done at Dubai Health's Salem medical fitness centres, in Abu Dhabi at DOH-approved visa screening centres such as SEHA's Disease Prevention and Screening Centres, and in Sharjah and the other Northern Emirates through Emirates Health Services. The core test is a blood test and a chest X-ray, with extra tests for some jobs. In Dubai the standard service costs AED 270 with the result in 24 working hours, as published by Dubai Health, and results arrive by SMS or email. Zavis lists 50 of these centres: 16 in Dubai, 24 in Abu Dhabi, 7 in Sharjah, 1 in Ajman, 1 in Umm Al Quwain, 1 in Fujairah.

Who needs a visa medical test in the UAE?

The UAE government portal says a residence visa requires applicants aged 18 and above to take a medical test, and dependants over 18 need a medical fitness certificate. Dubai Health's service covers everyone applying for or renewing a residency visa in Dubai, and Abu Dhabi's Department of Health describes the certificate as necessary to obtain or renew residency.

In Abu Dhabi, people on a visit visa are excluded from visa screening. We found no official exemption by nationality or visa type beyond these.

What does the visa medical test include?

The UAE government portal says foreign nationals must be free of communicable diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis to get a work or residence permit. Workers in nurseries, domestic workers, food handlers, and staff in restaurants, cafes, salons, beauty centres and health clubs must also test negative for syphilis and hepatitis B, and female domestic workers must test negative for pregnancy.

  • Dubai: a blood sample and a chest X-ray, plus vaccinations for some professions (Dubai Health).
  • Abu Dhabi: a physical examination including a skin check for leprosy, a blood test for HIV and a chest X-ray for tuberculosis. Some job groups add hepatitis B and C, syphilis and pregnancy tests and hepatitis B vaccination (Department of Health standard).
  • Sharjah and the Northern Emirates: the federal examination for communicable diseases, with hepatitis B vaccination required for nannies, housekeepers, nursery staff, salon and health club workers and health facility workers.

How much does the visa medical test cost?

Dubai Health publishes these prices: AED 270 for the standard service (24 working hours), AED 700 for premium (6 working hours), AED 1,020 for VIP (2 working hours) and AED 700 at the Salem Innovative Center (30 minutes). Domestic workers pay AED 320 or AED 750 for premium, plus AED 50 for the pregnancy test.

In Abu Dhabi, Capital Health Screening Centre, a DOH-approved private provider, publishes AED 250 standard, AED 350 fast track and AED 500 VIP. We could not confirm SEHA's or Emirates Health Services' current fees, so check them on the official pages before you go.

How do you get the results?

Dubai Health sends the result by SMS or email and has an online status check. Its system passes the fit or unfit certificate to the residency authority for visa processing. In Abu Dhabi the fitness certificate goes automatically to the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security. In the Northern Emirates the federal service card says results come by email and SMS within 1 to 2 days.

What happens if a result is positive?

A first reactive blood test is a screening result. In Abu Dhabi the Department of Health's standard calls for a second sample within 7 to 10 days to confirm it before any action is taken.

For tuberculosis found at renewal, the UAE government portal says people with scars, active or drug-resistant TB receive a conditional fitness certificate and a one-year residence visa, and are treated in the UAE. In Abu Dhabi, people in jobs that need hepatitis B clearance who test positive can move to a job category that does not need it within 30 days. The Abu Dhabi standard says a confirmed HIV positive result is reported as unfit for residency, and the Department of Health Chairman or the Minister of Health and Prevention can grant an exemption in cases they consider appropriate.

As published by Dubai Health and checked in October 2026: AED 270 for the standard service with the result in 24 working hours, AED 700 for premium (6 working hours), AED 1,020 for VIP (2 working hours) and AED 700 at the Salem Innovative Center (30 minutes). No official source we checked describes a separate medical test for the Emirates ID. Renewals usually ask you to bring your current Emirates ID.

What is the occupational health card in Dubai?

Dubai Health runs it as Occupational Health Screening: some professions need it at the employer's request, and the checks depend on the job category. Since February 2026, Unified Health Screening lets you do the occupational screening and the residency medical in one application and one visit.
