What is a skin imaging system?
A skin imaging system uses cameras, controlled lighting, and sometimes specialised light or three-dimensional capture to document skin and facial features. It can highlight visible colour variation, texture, pores, spots, redness, or surface lines that may be difficult to compare from memory. Some systems create side-by-side images or maps for discussion and follow-up. The output is an assessment aid, not a diagnosis by itself.
How it is used
The operator positions you consistently and captures images under controlled conditions. You may be asked to remove makeup, jewellery, or products that alter the surface appearance. The clinician reviews the images alongside your history and direct examination. Imaging can help establish a baseline before a treatment, support a conversation about priorities, and make later comparisons more structured.
Limits and realistic expectations
Images show selected visual features; they do not replace a skin examination, medical history, biopsy, or other testing when those are needed. Lighting, camera position, expression, hydration, makeup, and recent sun exposure can affect comparisons. A highlighted area is not automatically harmful, and a quiet image does not rule out every skin problem. A clinician interprets the findings in context.
Possible alternatives
Depending on the question, alternatives include an in-person dermatology examination, dermoscopy, clinical photographs, or other diagnostic tests. For cosmetic planning, the clinician may also use direct measurements and examination. The related Skin Analysis Imaging page explains the treatment and assessment context in more detail.
What this means for you
Ask which features are being assessed, whether the images are for cosmetic planning or medical review, and what will be compared at follow-up. Mention new or changing lesions, symptoms, skincare products, and recent procedures. If an image identifies a concern, ask what examination or next step is needed rather than treating the image label as a diagnosis.
Safety and privacy
Image capture is generally non-contact and does not expose the skin to treatment energy. Bright flashes or specialised lighting may feel uncomfortable for a short time. Tell the operator if light sensitivity is a concern. Ask how images are stored, who can view them, and how they are linked to your clinical record, particularly when facial images are taken.

Questions people ask
Can imaging diagnose skin cancer on its own?
No. A clinician must interpret the image and may recommend examination, dermoscopy, biopsy, or another test.
Why are images taken in controlled lighting?
Consistent positioning and lighting make visual comparisons more useful across visits.
