What is an isokinetic dynamometer?
An isokinetic dynamometer is an assessment and exercise device connected to a computer. It guides a limb through a planned movement at a set speed and records how much force you produce. Unlike a free weight, the device changes its resistance to match your effort while keeping the movement speed controlled.
How testing is carried out
The clinician positions and secures the relevant body part, explains the movement and allows practice attempts. You then push or pull through a comfortable, agreed range while the machine records performance. Testing may examine one muscle group, compare sides or track change over repeated assessments. The results are interpreted alongside pain, range of motion, control and the activities you want to resume.
Limits of the result
A machine measurement is not the same as everyday function. Results depend on positioning, instructions, effort, pain, range and the selected speed. A single test cannot describe running, lifting, reaction or confidence in a real setting. Clinicians use the findings as one part of a broader assessment, not as a stand-alone decision about readiness.
Other ways to assess strength
Strength may also be examined with a handheld dynamometer, manual resistance, functional tasks, movement observation or sport-specific drills. These methods place different demands on you and may be more practical at different stages. Your clinician can explain why a particular test fits the joint, muscle group and rehabilitation question being considered.
What the test means for you
You will be asked to make a deliberate effort while staying in the position and range provided. Testing is usually brief, but the effort can make the muscles feel tired afterward. Tell the clinician about pain, apprehension or a recent change in symptoms so the protocol can be adjusted and the result interpreted fairly.
Safety during testing
The clinician should screen your symptoms and secure the limb before testing. Follow the instructions and do not force a painful or unstable movement. Stop and report sharp pain, sudden weakness, unusual swelling, dizziness or another concerning symptom. Any decision to progress exercise should consider your examination and recovery response as well as the device record.

Questions people ask
Does the test show whether I am ready to return to sport?
It can provide useful strength information, but readiness also involves movement quality, endurance, sport demands, symptoms and clinician assessment.
Should I push as hard as possible?
Only use the effort requested by the clinician. Report pain or fear of movement so the test remains appropriate and the result is meaningful.
