Gamma Knife

Gamma Knife focuses many radiation beams on a defined target while limiting exposure to nearby brain tissue. Despite its name, it is not a cutting operation and does not use a surgical blade. Computer-guided planning combines imaging with the target location, shape, and size so the treatment team can direct radiation accurately. It is a form of stereotactic radiosurgery, even though treatment may be delivered in one or more sessions.

Before treatment, the team reviews scans and your medical history, then creates a plan. Head positioning may use a fitted frame or a mask, depending on the system and treatment plan. You remain still while the machine delivers focused radiation; the device does not touch the target. Staff monitor you throughout the appointment. Gamma Knife may be considered for selected brain lesions, vascular conditions, or other precisely located targets when a specialist believes focused radiation is suitable.

Gamma Knife is suited to a defined target and is not appropriate for every tumour, location, size, or medical situation. It does not remove tissue immediately, and the treatment effect can develop over time. Some people need surgery, conventional radiotherapy, medicines, observation, or a combination instead. Swelling or other treatment effects can occur near the treated area, so follow-up imaging and specialist review remain part of care.

Options may include open surgery, conventional radiation treatment, other stereotactic systems, drug treatment, or active monitoring. Surgery can provide tissue for diagnosis and remove accessible disease. Broader radiation plans can treat a larger region. Medicines may be used when disease is sensitive to systemic treatment. The choice depends on the diagnosis, target features, symptoms, previous treatment, and your overall health.

A Gamma Knife recommendation means your team sees a target that may be approached with precise radiation; it does not promise a particular result. Ask whether the aim is to control a lesion, reduce symptoms, or treat another condition, and ask how follow-up will measure the response. Tell the team about headaches, seizures, weakness, vision changes, medicines, and any difficulty lying still.

Gamma Knife is non-invasive in the sense that no incision is made, but focused radiation can still affect the target and nearby tissue. A frame can cause pressure or temporary soreness at its attachment points; a mask may feel restrictive. Possible effects depend on the treated area and dose. Seek urgent medical help for a new seizure, severe headache, confusion, weakness, or a sudden change in vision after treatment.
